- Colm Quinn - Dublin, Ireland - Deluxe tamper for La Pavoni Europiccolo
- I live in Ireland but could not find a tamper retailer or fabricator in Ireland or the UK, so i went on the web and found Greg. The ordering process and payment was easy and it arrived safely.
We had some measurement problems that meant that I had to send it back but it was resolved and returned (as quickly as if it had been down the road rather than the other side of the world). The tamper is beautiful and the wood chosen compliments my rosewood fittings, the engraving is quite neat too! But most of all, it's a tight fit in the basket and works perfectly. can't say more than that.

- Beautifil craftsmanship. A piece of art. Adds to the overall experience if you think of your coffee making as a sensual and theatrical daily event. The only thing that exceeds the quality of the tamper is Greg's efficiency. He answers queries promptly and in detail. A cottage industry that deserves your support. 100% recommendation.

- I found Greg to be helpful all the way through the process. My initial enquiries via email were responded to quickly and helpfully. Extremely prompt service, I sent my basket from Sydney on Monday and had it back with my tamper to suit by that Friday. Was pleased with the tamper as soon as i unpacked it, was even better than I expected. I bought the red gum handle and am happy with my choice.
I am a complete novice and this is my first tamper. The lines make it easy to get a consistent tamp which I have found helpful to know I am dosing the same each time and know it will fit under the showerscreen before I put the portafilter into place. All of the coffee fanatics I have shown this tamper to have loved it. I have let others use it a couple of time with my basket and they were hooked on it straight away. Greg produces a great product and is great to deal with.

- A truly functional, quality piece of engineering! All i have done is unpack the tamper (which was packed with soft packaging securely) together with my returned baskets, and test it!. The result(?).. perfect pour first time around! The whole purchase (from original enquiry, ordering, sending my baskets, payment, and delivery) only took 6 days! I was kept informed all throughout the process.. wonderful communication also.
All in all, i can't rate this experience highly enough! The tamper is an absolute work of art!

- Greg Pullman's processing of our order for one of his superb tampers was Rolls-Royce, old fashioned, travelling first class from beginning to end. several queries were handled as though i was his biggest client. What a delight. And what a tamper - tailor made for our baskets. The horizontal lines ensure even tamping, to enable even syrup flow.
Our truly handsome redgum Pullman tamper is a beautiful piece of redgum and gleaming metal, that blends perfectly with our sparkling ECM Giotto Premium + Rocky, for the making truly great coffees. We are grateful to own it. Greg Pullman and his product have our unreserved 100% recommendation. A big thanks.

- We had lots on enquiries about the tamper; not so much the tamper itself but about the baskets we had and the one we wanted to buy and Greg was very helpful with his responses to our e-mails before deciding to purchase one of his tampers.
The ordering and payment process was simple; but I managed to key in the wrong account number but we managed not to have to wait too long before our baskets and tamper were delivered to us and the tamper looks great. The tamper works great and our coffees are much improved from the first use. Greg has been great and responded promptly to all our questions.

- Tom Bainbridge - Auckland, NZ - Deluxe tamper for Nemox Napoletana
- The tamper is great. I am very happy with my purchase. The sizing is an exact fit, and it is easy achieve a consistant tamp via the indicator rings. it also looks good on the kitchen bench which is a bonus. I would advise anyone who is dissasisfied with their italian pump machine to invest in a good grinder and one of these tampers, (plus fresh coffee!) before looking to upgrade. By following advice on www.home-barista.com and in particular by using the Weiss distribution technique as explained there, i have been able to achieve a great pour and excellent results from my machine.
Prior to recieving Greg's tamper I had been using a poor fitting, light weight aluminium tamper that was the best that i could find at the time. even with a good grinder and fresh coffee i just could not get a good tamp and top quality results. now i am happy! Greg's service was prompt and friendly and he also gave me some advice re my machine which was an added bonus and much appreciated. Greg is a top guy to deal with.

- Allen Hull - Margaret River, WA - Deluxe tamper for Nuova Simonelli
- a very professional service. immediate feedback to queries, and turn around to and fro from perth took, i think, 8 days. the tamper arrived in my mail box the day following your email advising that it had been sent.
i have to admit that i was somewhat suspicious that the tamper would not have a great effect on the coffee i made, but have been proved absolutely wrong!. i was having great difficulty in making consistent cups of coffee, to the extent of actually thinking about ditching the simonelli and reverting to the baby gaggia. some cups were ok, some were too weak, and some over-extracted. the tamper has completely fixed these variations and my coffee making now produces pleasingly consistent cups with wonderful flavour and no bitterness. i was also thinking of buying one of the 'clicking' tampers, but now have absolutely no need to. and of course the pullman tamper is a lovely thing to both use and admire. thanks for such a great product.

- Mark Newcombe - TAS - Deluxe tamper for Gaggia Factory
- after reading every one of the testimonials i decided to buy a red gum pullman deluxe tamper, like many other's who have written on this site i was stunned when the tamper was unveiled from it's well wrapped little box. i am a function over aesthetics kind of guy but this piece of engineering is a work of art!
i was relieved to see my double basket had made it back in good order, i had considered just sending the measurements to greg but very the reason that i was buying a pullman tamper was to get the very best out of my coffee experience. how did it fit? "like a glove" doesn't even come close.
the fit is so good that when i tamp there isn't room for a single coffee ground to squeeze by. if you are reading this and you're still deciding whether to send your basket off & live with your other basket for 1-2 weeks? yes you can! "you must" you need to!! i am sure measuring your own tamper and sending that info to greg will result in a good fit but that's not why you're here - is it? you're after the best.
this is a two week review which i believe to be a good sampling of coffee goodness to let you know how it affects my shots. there have been reviews on this site that claim better coffee from the tamper. i haven't found this to be the case but the pullman does make a big difference to my daily coffee and this is why. essentially on the very best days with my old tamper - you know the ones. you wake up and make that first coffee of the day, the pour is good, the smell terrific, the crema is that great nut brown and your first mouthful brings a smile to the soul. my old tampa brought one of these glory shots along about 1 in 7, this is where the pullman makes its mark, i have one of those shots about 1 in 3 now! the 2 in 3 shots that don't make it are still far better than i ever get at my local cafe. in my judgement the pullman will not give you a better shot of coffee but it will give you a far more consistent shot and that makes the world of difference.
the ergonomics are fantastic, heavy at first but by the time you have tamped your first coffee you'll have the feel of it. the rings make a level tamp child's play. the pullman looks great next to my all chrome gaggia factory g106 lever pull.
greg was a pleasure to deal with and quick with his e-mails.
thanks greg, if you ever make a blackheart sassafras handle i'll buy a second tampa just because i can.

- Mark Scotney - NSW - Deluxe tamper for Bezerra BZ99S
- came across greg's tampers reading the various coffee forums and decided to take the plunge and make a serious upgrade from a plastic tamper supplied with machine.i think the true beauty of these tampers is greg's calibrating them to match portafilter baskets.extremely quick turnaround time for this
standard of tailored product (4 days), the wooden handle has seriously good hand feel and looks great. undoubtedly there's a bit of a learning process involved in adjusting coffee grind etc to match the single heavyweight tamp compared to previous tamper but that's all part of the fun and i'm already very happy with the more consistent shots.
overall a great deal with exemplary service.

- Fergus Reaper - VIC - Deluxe tamper for Saeco Via Venezia
- i came across the pullman tamper whilst browsing crema magazine's forums looking for info on how to get the best out of my saeco via venezia... the answers seemed to be drop the pressurised porta-filter holder and get a non-pressurised one and a decent tamper...
well, to be honest, the only tamper i considered after having a brief look at the rubbish on offer at a few stores was greg's custom made works of art.
i must say that the web order form was excellent and provided the right information on what was required of me. being able to pay via paypal made it a one minute affair and greg's email communications were excellent. i sent the filter baskets to be measured, and i'm glad i did... i received a perfect fitting tamper that suits both the single and double shot basket and the quality of the unit is just exceptional! the handle, whilst looking elegant, provides an excellent grip.
making the leap from pressurised to non-pressurised porta-filter has been an interesting one. but with a lot of experimenting i am now able to produce a far superior coffee than before.
i thoroughly recommend this product, after all it's only the cost of a few kg's of beans... beans that you'll now be able to do justice to!

- i stumbled across these tampers via a link from another site. after a few emails back and forth to greg, my filter baskets found their way into his very capable hands. approximately 9-10 days later, a knock at the door heralded the return of my baskets in the company of a very fine tamper.
these tampers are superbly finished, hand-crafted pieces of inanimate beauty. truly, much more appealing is the tamper in the flesh. photo's can only do so much...
what you don't get to appreciate in two dimensions is the weight of the tamper, the attention to detail in the craftsmanship and the stylish sophistication of machined stainless steel. and then there is the touch. it's funny, you'd think that i was somehow connected to greg through what i have just written, but i know him only through conversation and the delivered product.
i love my new pullman tamper (if you haven't already guessed). it looks great, it feels great and it works. if you're looking for a new tamper you will not be disappointed with one of greg's creations. he is friendly, knowledgeable, accomodating and prompt. these tampers are great value.

- the order and payment procedure went fine, without any problems. i received the tamper after about 1â½ week, which is expected. immideately when i opened it, i could feel the quality. the steel and the red gum with oil finish plays together very well. i asked for a rustic piece, and i am very satisfied with the look. i actually have it on my kitchen table for ornamental purposes as well. the engraving is nice, and greg took a lot of time to get to know how i wanted it.
i am very satisfied with my tamper. i no longer need to knock the tamper against the portafilter to make the grinds fall down the sides before the final tamp.
all in all, a great investment. these beauties lasts forever!

- Andrew - VIC - Deluxe tamper for La Pavoni Europiccolo
- greg's service is excellent. he responded to my emails within a couple of hours every time, and is really friendly. i paid using direct transfer which went very smoothly (accepted within 24 hours). i requested a tamper without sending the filterbasket (at my own risk); however using only a ruler my measurement was innaccurate. i had the tamper altered - there was a 72 hour turn-around between when i sent my only filterbasket and when i received the tamper. i would recommend those considering ordering without sending their filterbasket to reconsider.. it would just be easier that way.
it's a great looking device, with a very heavy base and a smooth domed top that is the perfect size for my hand.
it creates a perfect 'puck' in the filterbasket with very little effort, and there is no way any coffee could get caught in the sides - it's an absolutely perfect fit.
i have a la pavoni lever machine - my model has a non-standard size filterbasket - as i believe many do, so you're pretty much forced to get a custom-made tamper. i spent about $30 trying tampers that didn't fit exactly, but then figured i paid $1000 for the coffee machine, and $400 for the grinder, so $60 for a tamper of this quality just completes the project.

- I thought it looked great and it was also heavy enough but it was a toss up between that an a heavier tamper. So happy now with the choice as it is far more gorgeous in real life than I imagined from seeing a picture of it online.
It is excellent to use; the timber feels lovely and it is well balanced and enjoyable to hold because of the design. It is a perfect fit for both baskets. Tamping the coffee is a delight because it is even and simple to use. Greg was great to deal with and the process was quick and easy -(14 days total from the posting of the basket and money order to having the tamper in hand)The price is more than reasonable for this hand made tamper.
I am truly delighted and would happily recommend this product.

- Simon Yeo - Malaysia - Deluxe tamper for Gaggia Classic (
see tamper) - Received my Tamper yesterday after a long delay (almost 5 weeks but mostly due to the inept local customs). The ordering was simple as Greg was helpful and very prompt in replying emails. Paypal is easy to use and accept overseas card without any problem. I have to say on the business side, Greg is most professional.
I am surprised at the weight of the tamper. I have been using plastic tamper for a long time and was not used to it at first. But it's just a matter of practice. The greatest improvement for me personally is the speed - now I tamp only once and it's done.
The tamper itself is top class. The Huon Pine is very smooth and is as good as any Huon Pine craft I have. It fits perfectly into both my filter baskets. The carving is not as obvious as I would like but again this is due to my personal font selections.
Overall this is a superb product. Excellent merchant to work with.

- Michael Forder - SA - Deluxe tamper for Rancilio Silvia
- My experience with coffee (having matured and taken a leap of faith from brewing good'ol Blend 43) began like with most purchases, a thorough investigation and consumer review check of what's good and what's bad. Trust me - don't read a manufacturer's "glossy" brochure!!.....
Charged with my highly-recommended Rancilio Silvia (after quite a few frustrated returns (4 in fact) of brand-new but faulty Breville Class 800ES machines) i set out to begin my latest interest of coffee brewing, by subjecting my other half to the important job of taste testing.
Keeping in mind, i'm no barista - but judging by the lack of convulsions, the smiles received, my "tester" kept coming back for more. i guess i was doing something right. However, during the process of preparing all different sorts of coffees (including my first attempt at steaming milk which is fun especially when u blast it out of a jug - testimony that the Silvia is one good steam maker!!) - I was quite un-impressed with the poor excuse of tamper included with the Silvia (well i blamed a few dodgy shots to it and convinced the other half a more robust one was required) - so it wasn't long to get the nod to begin another series of investigations and checking consumer reviews.
In a short while, after going back to all the usual "coffee review web sites" - i had a reasonable idea of what to look out for and what not to consider and very quickly narrowed my seaching to Greg's Tampers. After reading all of the reviews and taking particular attention to Greg's "Testimonial" page, i concluded it was worth checking it out further.
Fortunately, being located in Adelaide, SA - i had the opportunity to meet up with Greg (who is also local and i like to support local manufacturing wherever possible), after exchanging many emails on deciding what size would be suitable for the Silvia. Greg mentioned there may be slight variations in the diameters of the single and double baskets and normally this variation could mean one size does not fit another so a properly fitting tamper could be a compromise between baskets.
As i was now keen to get one ASAP, we decided to try one that he had and if it didn't fit properly, we could meet up again and exchange it for another one. The wooden handle was suprisingly easy to handle (not to mention being wooden it didn't absorb or lose heat like a metal one) and as i have a solid Jarrah dining setting, it was an easy match and looks good as well. Something about the ageless beauty of natural wood...
Back on topic - alas, that night was filled with more experimenting (pulling consistant shots that absolutely were a breeze to tamp, not to mention a LOT better frothed milk) and after measuring the inside diameters of both baskets and the tamper decided that a tamper about 0.3mm larger was required for a perfect fit (though the genuine baskets were both a little different). Next day, i emailed Greg and he took back the one i previously had and exchanged it with one that fit the specs I requested. This was tried last night. Happiness all-round.
As far as knowing whether this product is better/worse than others - well i simply cannot say as i haven't compared it to anything apart from the useless plastic one which came with the Silvia. This one fits near perfectly (both baskets) and produces a very even tamp and more importantly a consistant shot. Is it all in the tamper? Probably not, but it is a LOT better than what i have previously used.
Finally, is it good value for money? Well, i'm at the stage of this experience that sometimes "cheap" is NOT the main driver for making a purchase. In my opinion the value of any particular product is the sum of its cost and the service/support available. You could buy cheaper products, but would they come with the same service/support??? Unlikely!! There is truth in the statement "You get what you pay for". The same is with the Silvia and the same applies to Greg's tampers. Stop procrastinating and go get one!!
regards,
Michael

- Steve Leung - Scotland, UK - Deluxe tamper for Rancilio Silvia (
see tamper) - My initial enquires were regarding overseas delivery charges and my email was answered promptly. The ordering process was very well thought out with clear measurement guidelines for the tamper base. Payment was very straightforward via Paypal (recommended for international orders). The tamper was made very quickly (under 1 week with Greg just back from holiday) and delivery time to the UK was 6 working days.
On arrival, the tamper was well packaged. Just out the box, my first impressions were of a well weighted and beautifully finished tamper. The stainless steel base was flawless and the weight was surprising but I got used to it very quickly. My tamper was the checkerboard pattern and again the finishing was very good. However, some of the segments did not line up perfectly but it is a handmade product. In saying that, it is a lovely design and the wood shows a lot of character. I had the tamper engraved and again, the lettering was perfect.
Compared to my ill fitting (56mm vs. 58.3mm) aluminum tamper, using the Pullman tamper was a joy. The extra weight made tamping so easy. Also I found that using the etched rings were useful in checking the level of the tamp. The head of the tamper felt smooth and warm and fitted well into the palm of my hand (my hand size is small but the head did not feel too big).
Overall, the level of service has been exemplary throughout the whole process. I felt happy in dealing with Greg and felt secure in buying his product overseas.

- I think it is quite wonderful when something that is purely functional turns out to be beautiful as well - beautifully designed, beautifully made, that's a Pullman tamper. Every detail shows the quality of craftsmanship so, sitting on top of your machine, or in your hand, it is a beautiful object that also fulfills its function perfectly.
Finally, I have a flat tamper of a proper size and weight, that fits my hand and is extremely comfortable and easy to use. The fine wood handle just invites you to hold it.
I had particular requirements for the size that Greg met precisely and promptly, and it arrived protectively packaged two days after despatch. The whole process couldn't be simpler and it is great value. You don't realise the difference it makes to have a well-designed tamper - whatever your method - until you have used one like this. Probably, it would be a good idea to be able to order different sized handles as well as bases, for larger or smaller hands, but mine fits my hand perfectly.
All in all, a great experience buying this from Greg.

The tamper is a great fit for my baskets. Nice look and feel too. Works much better than what I was using. I very much like the ring markings on the edges of the piston. Helps correct my bad aim. Count me as a satisfied customer.

- Thanks Greg for the tamper, it has made a big difference, the only disappointment is that, pictures on your website looks like a real red gum handle, mine looks as if it has been stained?
I'm not sure what gives that impression; the handles are all genuine, none are stained at all. As mentioned on the order page the exact colour does vary as is to be expected with naturally-grown products, and different monitor settings can make the colours of web photos look different to what they actually are, so this is the only explanation I can offer. This may be able to be exchanged if the particular colour is not what you were after. -Greg
Other than that I'm very happy with the whole process.
Many thanks will buy again.

- After receiving this tamper I found I had to learn to tamp all over again. I didn't realise just how inefficient my old tamper was. My shots are now more consistant as a result of using this tamper. Not to mention that tamping is now quicker. Very happy. Oh yes, it looks and feels great too :-)

Greg is very speedy in; answering enquires, discerning needs, keeping you informed of the progress and delivery times. But at the end of the day it is all about the tamper and it is fantastic, beautiful, functional, well designed, well built, an all round class job. Thanks Greg

- Very happy with the tamper; right size and very effective at doing the job!! Love the weight/heft as well as the actual tamper itself (which is just beautiful!) - I tend to break things but I cannot see that ever being a problem with this one. Also happy with the postage, communication and service, so thanks.

- Karl P - VIC - Deluxe tamper for Rancilio Silvia
- Thank you GP.
Researching - I seriously believe GP you deserve more airtime. It took me a while to find your brilliant products initially having to contemplate some US alternatives. Coffee snobs and coffeegeek helps, Alan's website too.
Purchasing - a breeze - GP is jolly accomodating to my particular delivery needs. Thanks. Spot on delivery time - delivery man came at 1830 as I arrived home. Beauty. Brilliant packaging, stunning open-the-box experience.
And of course, the tamper. Like a lot of things in life, the very last ounce of brilliance cost - from the best speaker cables, to the finest wines. Using the Pullman is an experience each time. The Jarrah wood is stunning to look at, the feel is hefty, it screams luxury and refinement. No, I know it probably could be cheaper but a stainless steel lifeless cold hearted tamper sells $30 as it is.
If you go to the trouble of owning a decent machine, grinding beans etc, you owe it to yourself to buy one. And I'd hate to sound self congratulating, the coffee does taste better. You can push and compress the ground like no plastics/SS ones could.
The EXPERIENCE makes it all jolly worth every cent.

- I have read a lot of good things about the Pullman tamper, and I am pleased to report that the tamper I received fullfills my every expectation. The tamper is beautifully finished, perfectly weighted and a pleasure to use. It is amazing how much simpler and more effective my tamp is using the Pullman compared to the previous collection of tampers I have used. - Cafe Tropez - NSW - Deluxe tamper for Faema E-91 Diplomat
I came across www.coffeetamper.com.au in one of the cafe trade magazines, "Cafe" i think it was. At this point in time I had just taken over a cafe and was playing around with espresso. Initally I didnt think much of the tamper, but after listening and watching experts as well as experimentation, I came to the conclusion that a good fitting solid and comfortable tamper would do both the espresso extraction and my shoulders a world of good. So in a burst of determination and excitement I put my order in for my first tamper. It arrived within a week, and I put it to use immediately.
It felt immediately comfortable and the ability to "polish" and pack the coffee puck made extraction more consistent resulting in a lovely pour that were always a hit and miss affair with the grinder attached tampers you find so often. Add to this the improve in ergonomics that come with using an in-hand tamper instead of a grinder-attached tamper (read less shoulder and upper arm stress) and the benefits of a PULLMAN coffee tamper far outweighs the cost.
They look the part, the do the job so if you are serious about espresso get one of these Pullman tampers.

Happy to say I am now the proud owner of a Greg Pullman tamper.
I had previously graduated from plastic to stainless steel and was happy with the results but was envious after seeing the Pullman tamper. When I changed machines at our cafe I noticed that the standard size tamper that I had was a fraction looser so jumped at the chance to try a Greg Pullman. The service was personal and quick using the easy web ordering system and follow up email contact. Even when we discovered that there was a slight size difference in the three group machine baskets Greg was able to fine tune the engineering to achieve a snug fit. The tamper is slightly lighter than a full stainless so the True Tamp rings on the base were invaluable when checking for even tamping.
I really enjoy the feel of the beautifully turned Red Gum handle. What a great Australian product with world wide appeal.

Now for the tamper...
Perfect snug fit, I recommend you send your basket in, might as well have it right the first time. I previously used the plastic tamper that came with Silvia, not very good and is the wrong size tsk tsk. With the Pullman tamper, I'm pulling better shots each time with much more crema. In fact the tamper is so effective that I had to grind a bit coarser to get the flow right.
My only niggle is with the Checkerboard handle. I imagine it's not as durable as the other handles, mine has a little dent in it already, maybe a little warning similar to the Huon handle would be beneficial to future purchasers. Has no effect on the coffee but is no longer perfect like when I received it :-(
P.V. - Sorry you've had a problem there. The checkerboard handle should actually be as hard as any other handle (apart from the softer Huon Pine as you mentioned). The woods used are Australian Oak and Jarrah, both of which are hardwoods as as hard as the other handles available. This of course doesn't exempt them from any damage, but it would be unusual for them to get dented unless they received a blow from a sharp object, such as being dropped onto the corner of a bench. - Greg
Is it worth it for the price? I'd definitely say so considering a standard SS tamper will set you back about $50 already and it won't be custom made to fit your basket like the Pullman tamper.Overall Score: 9.5/10
We are over the moon with the tamper for our Rancilio machine. The one currently on order is for my father inlaw (coffee perfectionist), he cant't keep his hands off ours when he visits. He has been using a tamper that is too small for the basket on the Brasillia machine, so we are confident the new tamper will assist him in making even better coffee!

But most importantly: it works! Greg's tamps have a nice, heavy and solid feel, but are not overwhelmingly heavy. I sent my double basket down to Greg, so the tamp is a perfect fit. There is almost no coffee left sticking to the walls of my basket, which means there is no need for tapping the side of the portafilter. I'm still getting used to using a tamp that fits, but the first thing I've noticed is that it is speeding up my preparation time.
Greg's service was great - 10/10! He kept in touch regularly and got the job done quickly. Sending my basket to Greg had me worried at first - that it might get damaged in the post, but Greg gave good advice on how to post it, and he emailed when it arrived, to reassure me that it arrived safely, in one piece. He also emailed us when he had finished the job and when he was sending it to us. If only more businesses operated like that!
Overall, I am extremely happy with Greg's service, and even happier with the product! Thanks Greg!

One word of criticism would be the engraving of www.coffeetamper.com.au on the handle. In my opinion it would be nicer to have something like the pullman tamper engraved on it rathar than a web address but that is only my opinion. Also it is not 100% straight along the handle. Having said that, it barely detracts from the beauty of the tamper and i'm realy just being picky :) As for functionality... so far I have only used the plastic tamper that came with the machine and ofcourse it beats it hands down. It fit perfectly and tamps just like in the pictures of 'the perfect tamp' that I see on websites.
Thanks for those thoughts. I'll see whether some generally preferred alternative text could be chosen rather than the website URL.
Update: 1/2006 - the website URL has now been scrapped in favour of a logo.
All in all, I feel very comfortable that the money was very well spent. I was looking for a good tamper in shops and although I found ones that match the price, none came even close with beauty and functionality (they don't have the same perfect fit and weight). Its a great product.
Overall Score: 9.5/10
I will add that it wasn't clear to me that the handle would be engraved with the name of your website. There's a lot of information on the products page and it's easy to miss. I think it could be stated on the order form that if one chooses not to have any custom engraving, the website will be engraved on the handle by default.
I would also like to say that I really think one ought to have the option of not having the website engraved on the handle, to be honest I may have had second thoughts if I had realised it was not an option. It detracts from the simplicity of the design and makes the tamper look like a promotional tool.
Thanks for those comments, and sorry this wasn't clear from the outset.
Update: 1/2006 - the website URL has now been scrapped in favour of a logo.
A few unengraved handles are normally kept for custom engraving and these may be made available if absolutely no engraving is wanted. However whether this can happen in every case will depend on whether I have it available, and if I do, how many are available and when the next batch of handles are due to arrive. All these factors make it difficult to put a definitive statement anywhere on the webiste; however I have now mentioned on the Engraving page that the possibility is there, and provided a contact facility which will hopefully address this. - Greg
Everything else was great, though, the whole buying experience, and the quality of the tamper, so thank you.Overall Score: 9/10

But the next day I emailed Greg with the tale of woe, and asked what a new handle and/or tamper would cost. To my delight and utter surprise he offered a replacement handle (the stainless steel base had resisted the dog tooth marks) free of charge, and would make one as soon as the holidays were over. True to his word, a new handle arrived in three weeks, and I had to persuade him to accept just the cost of the postage as an expression of my gratitude. The tamper has been in almost daily use ever since and continues to be a beautiful and highly functional part of my coffee equipment.
I can't speak highly enough of the quality of the service and the product.

I ordered my new tamper to replace the rather inadequate one that came with my new Rancilio Silvia and Rocky grinder. The tamper fits the filters perfectly and makes it dead easy to get a smooth, level tamp. Gregs workmanship is first class and cannot be faulted, something that I appreciate because I like doing woodwork with fine tools, preferably old, well made hand tools. This is indeed a solid tool to last a lifetime and beyond.
Oh, and I nearly forgot to mention that the service is great and Gregs emails are most friendly. You can buy his tampers with the utmost confidence, and in the knowledge that they are of the highest quality and extremely good value for money.

Just wanted to express my thanks for the tamper you made for me. I've been using it now for a good few weeks and all I can say is, very impressed!! Works perfectly, good weight and fit, no more mess from chasing grinds around the edge of the filter basket (thanks for the tip of sending the basket in).
I would also like to add by saying how impressed I was at the handling of my order from start to end, hassle free and also very helpful to queries I had about the ordering process. I was surprised at how resonable your custom made tampers were cost wise, when compared to ones off the shelf that are set to a standard gauge and don't always fit perfectly.

My initial enquiries were answered very promptly and professionally. In response to my questions on wood selection and engraving (I opted for no engraving), Greg was kind enough to include colour pictures of some of the handles he had in stock. My filter basket was sent out by overnight post and payment (online bank transfer) made on a Tuesday. The tamper, crafted to fit my specific filter basket, arrived on Friday (overnight post option) in a securely padded cardboard box.
The wooden handle looked even better than the pictures and the tamper itself is finely machined and is of high quality thorughout. I am still perfecting my technique with the new tamper but I can already see the possibilities of much better espresso shots. The 3 grooves on the tamper (a unique feature of Greg's tampers) is an excellent guide to those, like me, still perfecting technique.
One of the most satisifying online purchases I've made so far. For not much more than a mass produced metal tamper, you get something that works better, is carefully hand crafted using natural materials with a unique texture and grain pattern. Highly recommended!

The first is that it is so easy to use that if I am not careful I can easily tamp too heavy. What felt like 15 kgs with the plastic tamper that came with the machine can be over 20 with the Greg Pullman model (just need to re calibrate my arm again with the bathroom scales)!
The second is that the fit is so good that I need to make sure that I am properly lined up before I tamp or it can easily hit one of the sides at the start of the tamp, not going in straight and then wedging in the basket. Not a big deal, just need to get used to it. This reflects technique rather than any issue with the tamper. I am sure that the size is OK because I can spin the tamper easily on top of the tamped coffee - It never sticks. It also fits effortlessly into empty baskets. Same result for single and double baskets.
After tamping, the result is a beautiful clean compressed coffee puck in the bottom of the basket - the water can only go through the coffee! Not a coffee ground to be seen anywhere else!
Only negative (small one) is the web site engraved on the handle. I didn't realise this was the default if I didn't chose my own text.
Peter - Sorry this was your impression. This is explained under 'Deluxe Tamper' and 'Engraving' on the Products page, but I'll try to make it clearer elsewhere too.

I am a beginner at espresso coffee although at this stage I do understand the need for consistancy and I feel that this tamper will help me in one of the important parts of the process. The bevelled edge at the top of the metal part, along with the rings down the side are helpful in creating an even tamp.
I own a Rancilio Silvia and I feel that this tamper does a far greater job than the small plastic one that comes with the machine. The tamper by itself is not going to fix all my tamping problems but it is going to help me eliminate them.
I was glad in one way that I sent in my single and double filter baskets as it ended up that they were sized slightly differently. Although, unfortunately luck had it that my double filter is slightly bigger in diameter than my single one, meaning that the tamper fit is better on the single basket, even though I use the double more often. From this experience I would say that sending both filter baskets is very important. I was hesitant to send them both but in the end I'm glad I did it.
Ordering was a smooth process as Greg was very helpful and did his best to answer any queries and fix any problems I had.

Just a quick thank you. The Tamper arrived as you said it would and I've been using it for about a week now. It's an absolute joy to use and a thing of beauty. Even better than I expected. I love the tamping marks down the side and the weight and feel of it are perfect.
Thanks for your great service and great product.
Rob.
- It does give you a good picture as to the amount of coffee in the basket and weather extra needs to be added which is a good thing. Mine is just leaving two rings showing.
- In addition when I turn the portafilter around I can check that the tamp is even on both sides (as I often get it wrong). This has led to even flow out of the portafilter.
- I though there could be a problem with grounds getting stuck in the rings but it hasn't ever been a problem.
- I have seen a definite improvement in my shot quality with your tamper.
I don't think the rings are an earth shattering improvement but there is definitely some advantages to it.

Just wanted to let you know that I've made so many astounding espresso shots using the tamp I bought last week, I've lost count. It really makes a difference for espresso-ground coffee to be properly tamped! Stuck with using the preground Illy for now, but even that makes delicious espresso/machiatto.
Previously I had used Vittoria Oro for decent coffee with my Gaggia, but it's clear to me now that I wasn't able to tamp properly with the plastic tamp. The coffee was nice but never outstanding. At the same time, trying to make the Illy taste good was impossible using the plastic tamp. Using the deluxe tamper I barely have to press down to get a full tamp of Illy. It's so simple! The weight of the tamper is a great "feature" - just by putting the tamper in the basket, the coffee is already leveled. If I slightly overpack the double basket with Illy I get the shots out in 26 seconds. Fabulous! You even got a mention on my new blog: http://www.randomfixation.net (under "all things caffeinated").
Thanks again,
Matt Hawke
Thankyou for your efficient and friendly service, Greg....I know nothing about coffee making, but with your guidance, my husband now thinks I am a legend!!! Just a quick note to let you know that my tamper has arrived. Thanks for your very quick service. The tamper is beautiful - your (excellent) images on the website still don't do the satin stainless steel and jarrah full justice. It is now sitting proudly on the top of my Sylvia. Impressive weight; perfect fit in the wide Rancilio basket; perfect tamps.

Thankyou. The tampers look great, they're well made and work perfectly! They arrived on Friday afternoon and we haven't stopped using them since. They make a huge difference to the quality of our espresso.
I'll definitely be back in a year or two when I get my hands on a high-end machine like the Rancilio Silvia
Thanks very much.

The tamper is truly a 'must-buy' item to replace the pathetic, too small and flimsy tamper that comes with the Rancilio Silvia. The tamper is a work of art and feels extremely solid. The jarrah handle is comfortable to use every morning unlike the stainless steel tamper I use to have that was VERY COLD to hold. It fits snugly into the palm of my hand and inspires confidence everytime I tamp. The custom engraving was 'better than expected' and I can say it is DEFINITELY worth the extra money!
I highly recommend the tamper to anyone who is going to spend their hard-earned cash on a coffee machine and grinder.
Keep up the good work!
The Tamper arrived and I am very pleased. It looks and works a treat. Didn't know how I managed with the old plastic one that came with the Silvia before I got the 'Deluxe'. Anyway, again, well done. Will definitely recommend you to my friends.
Regards,
Brad Allen.
Absolutely delighted with the tamper - Quality of the product is faultless - beautifully finished, nicely weighted and has an excellent hand-feel. Far more satisfying to use and look at than the mass produced variety. In terms of getting maximum performance out of the machine a good quality tamper such as this is an essential tool. One comment (not a criticism) but an observation is that the tamper is so perfectly machined to a Rancilio basket that it doesn't actually fit certain other 58MM baskets such as a LaMarzoca which are internally slightly concave rather than straight(and hence smaller than 58mm) toward the top. Against this it fits the Rancilio basket like a glove, thus you get a very even tamp without grinds being displaced up the side of the basket which is a real nuisance when a tamper doesn't fit as well.
Brian - yes the La Marzocco baskets are a different size. This is why I request which machine the tamper will be for, so I can ensure it fits. I'm happy to do any remachining to fit the LM baskets free of charge, but obviously the fit in the Silvia won't be as good. - Greg
In summary - would highly recommend and would definitely purchase again.
Best wishes
Brian
In terms of ordering my tamper you certainly made my experience a breeze, as being a novice it is sensational to be able to rely on your expertise in knowing exactly what tamper I needed for my machine and the personal updates / feedback you gave me during this process was brilliant.
The quality of the tamper you have provided me is exceptional and I can't help but think it seems to be better crafted than my coffee machine.

The new Tamper fits the filter baskets perfectly, is ideally balanced for the task and the finish and quality of workmanship is absolutely first class. I have already recommended your Tampers to a couple of other people but I don't know whether they have followed up on this yet. I suppose to a 'non-connoisseur', it probably seems like a lot of money to pay for a relatively small and basic piece of kit. You don't really appreciate just how well suited to the task your Tampers are until you've used one for a short while and particularly after one has been using one of the horrible plastic manufacturer supplied pieces of rubbish for several months. Your service and follow-up are second to none and I could not have asked for a more trouble-free purchasing experience. The Tamper arrived in perfect condition, in good time and well protected against the vagaries of long distance transport. In particular, I like the 'satin' like finish of the Tamper base. It seems to resist attracting coffee grounds (even oily grounds) no matter what blend of beans I'm using at the time and is a breeze therefore, to keep clean and ready for its next use. The handle is a perfect fit into my hand and absolutely stable when applying the tamp, even when going for tamps of 20Kg plus. This is testimony to the effort invested in the design of the handle and its fit to the base. As close to perfect as it is possible to get I would say.
I am very happy with my new Tamper, it is both a joy to use and to behold when sitting in its pride of place next to the Mokita. Its precision makes for very simple and accurate control of the tamping force being applied at all times and also that the tamp is completed perpendicular to the PF basket. This is much more difficult to achieve with a lesser quality Tamper because of the poor fit of the Tamper into the PF basket and because the handles are so poorly designed. The combination of the beautiful Jarrah handle and the sold s/s base makes for a very effective and attractive instrument. It really is too well made to refer to it as a mere implement or utensil but instrument takes into account the high degree of workmanship and materials that go into its manufacture.
I have absolutely no qualms at all in recommending your Tampers to anyone who is looking to improve on this most important aspect of producing consistently good espressos at home. For that matter, your Tampers would stand up to the hurly-burly of a commercial application without any trouble at all. Probably do a lot better than the usual solid Aluminium jobs that you see most of them using and keep doing it for longer too.
Cheerio,
Mal.
I think the new short handle is a step forward for a product I couldn't really fault to begin with (well maybe I did thin the handle was too long). Service was superb - I rate Greg equal first on my top three (it's a tie) for online retailer service. The proof of the superb service came out when I was accidentally provided with a vanilla tamper instead of a Deluxe - I had a replacement on my doorstep almost straight away - no hassles. For me, proof of service comes out when a retailer has to fix a mistake - it's like a test which Greg passed with flying colours. The goods arrived on time, as described and in perfect condition. Can't ask for more. The tampers are beautiful - I haven't seen a better looker. The only fault with the tamper is that the handle is too long - but Greg has now fixed this. The fit of the tamper to basket is absolutely spot on - I've never seen better.
My Rancillio Sylvia and Nemox grinder are in fine company (and my coffee is getting even better :)
Thanks for the on going order process feedback, and your speedy delivery. Good luck in selling on line.
I just wanted to send you a big thanks for the two tampers I recently purchased. I have only just managed to collect them from the post office about a week ago but have now used my hand tamper a number of times, and it has really allowed me to start producing a more consistent shot than when I was using the pathetic plastic disc tamper that came with my machine!
I really appreciate the effort that you put into making both my hand tamper and the Vanilla model for my parents Napolitana II. The fact that you held up shipping them because you noticed a slight nick on one of them, only to re-machine it, is a testament to the enthusiasm you obviously put into your handcrafted works of art. The few days delay that caused was well worth it from my perspective, I have a flawless item that will work forever!
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to others, and should I get a new machine in the future (should that just be 'when I get a new machine'??) and need a new tamper, you'll know about it pretty quickly!
Best regards,Brett
I can’t believe the number of people I read about on the various coffee web sites, who spend a fortune on espresso machines and the latest Burr grinders with out upgrading the “plastic tamper” that invariably comes with their machine. It’s as close to sacrilege as drinking Instant! Keep up the good work.
Regards,Rob Scriven
I have had your tamper for my Gaggia Factory a couple of months now, and I am very impressed with the workmanship and performance of the tamper. I was previously having a bit of trouble producing decent crema with the Gaggia, and I had tried a variety of cheaper tampers. I found that your custom made tamper was a perfect fit, and once I got the grind right, I was away!
My shots are now consistent, and produce great crema. The tamper itself is a fine looking piece of work, with the jarrah handle.....in fact my only criticism would be the web address stamped on the top of the handle....I realise that advertising is important, but your product should sell on its fine quality alone, once word gets out. Bit like buying a beautiful piece of wooden furniture with the makers name stamped on the front :)
Chris - thanks for your point. The engraving was actually a suggestion from another customer (click to read) who felt the handle was lacking without some kind of identification. I guess everyone has their own opinion on these sorts of things, and I try to please as many people as I can! - Greg
Keep up the good work...I am certainly enjoying my coffee!
Cheers,
Chris
Definitely a must buy, I have recommended these tampers in other forums on the web.
Cheers,Vicki<
I received my tamper ...'hand delivered' by Greg to a pre-arranged spot a couple of days ago, and I have to say that the workmanship in his product, and the service he gives are both exemplary.
I found his website whilst looking at various tampers, after realizing the importance of a using a properly designed one for producing consistently good coffee, instead of using the toy types that usually come with home esspresso machines. After discovering that he was operating in S.Aust., I thought why not give a local guy a go instead of spending money overseas.
I have to say that this tamper is as good as it gets. It also has received very favourable comments from those seeing it on top of my Gaggia Classic.
All the very best Greg.
Cheers,
Graham Evans
The tamper eventually did arrive but in these days of instant-ordering & creditcard payment it was a bit 'out of the ordinary' to be delayed by the need to have to first send a cheque & then wait for it to be cleared prior to despatch . ..I understand that you will have your own rationale for this, but I am fairly sure that some people could get very annoyed about it. You could perhaps negate this somewhat by making it much clearer that not only is it a hand-made product but the payment/delivery mechanism is ALSO somewhat 'grass-roots'...
Bruce - Both these points are addressed under the FAQ page. I understand the frustration with cheques, which is why I list cheque payment as a last option under both the FAQ page and the Order page (payment methods link).
The build quality and the aesthetics of the tamper are fine. I found the lower edge of the tamper was a bit sharp because it tended to jam/bind inside the baskets ever-so-slightly tapered sides, especially if one wants to load a weak/low shot. . with a very full shot it is less of a problem (still tends to bind slightly tho), but I do feel that it is a whisker too tight. Additionally, I would suggest that final assembly MUST include a dab of loctite to prevent the handle from unscrewing if doing a 'polish' turn or two on top of the fill ~ jamming & unscrewing was prevalent due to the slightly too-tight fit etc described above.
Bruce - it sounds as though your filter baskets are a little smaller than 'standard'. I will take this into consideration for the specifications of future tampers, but the only way to get a 'perfect' fit is to supply a filter basket with the order. A properly fitting tamper shouldn't bind in the basket, and will negate the need for any threadlocking compound on the handle - many customers like to be able to remove the handle to give the tamper a good clean in the sink, and loctite would make this necessary handle removal quite diffiuclt. - Greg
I was very pleased with the way Greg took aboard my comments & offered to look into incorporating same!
Just wanted to let you know that I received my tamper yesterday. Many thanks!! Very pleased with the quality of the product. I'll be sure to recommend your product to my friends.
Cheers,K
One year ago I had a small Krupps espresso machine, bought ground supermarket coffee which I just levelled with the scoop, and I made the best coffee of anyone I knew. Then I ran across the 'Coffee for Connoisseurs' site, and read about all the things no-one had told me that I was doing wrong.
Now I buy Alan's premium coffee unground (and sometimes roast green beans in a popcorn maker), grind my beans with a burr grinder, and tamp them with one of Greg's stainless steel tampers. I could not have believed before I tried it what a difference that this makes - my coffee has improved so much that even my friends who drink instant muck have noticed, and think there might actually be a point to my collection of coffee making equipment.
I've found the tamper to be critical to getting the full benefit from using a grinder (like being able to vary the grind according to the roast and the age of the beans) - without tamping there is too much variation in the shots pulled for the same length of time. Greg's tamper is actually my 3rd since buying the burr grinder - and far and away the best. Superior materials superbly crafted - and great customer service. My other tampers were a sloppy fit in the portafilter - my convex one especially tended to push coffee out all around its base - but Greg goes to great lengths to make sure that his tampers are machined to an exact fit. I like the flat base; and the wooden handle is both stylish and comfortable in the hand to use.
I wouldn't use any other tamper now... and I'll definitely be ordering another one when I next upgrade my espresso machine.
Cheers,
Richard
Just wanted to say how happy I am with the tamp. It makes all the difference as the one that comes with the machine doesn't even fit properly! You'd think that for a machine this price that they would at least include a tamp that fitted. It's a beautifully made product.
Thanks again - BrandonI am very happy with my tamper and can honestly say that it has improved the shots from my Rancilio Silvia from those obtained with the cheap plastic tamper that came with the machine. The tamper arrived promptly and in pristine condition, is extremely pleasing to the eye, and feels good in the hand.
My only criticism is that if the level of coffee in the basket is slightly low the tamper tends to stick in the basket (I suspect it sticks in the ridge of the basket which is of the removable type) and when I turn the tamper to 'polish' the dose the entire basket turns. This is particularly problematic with the single shot basket which I rarely use but when I do I tend to revert to the old plastic tamper. I notice that the original plastic tamper has a rounded bottom - perhaps this is to prevent this problem. I am also aware that it is possible to obtain ridgless baskets for the Silvia portafilter but haven't gotten around to checking this out.
David - this can occasionally happen if the filter baskets weren't exactly the right size when they left the factory. Unfortunately there's no way to get an 'exact fit' down to the last 10 microns for every machine unless the basket is supplied with the order. If you return the base with the single basket to me, I'm happy to resize your tamper to suit your basket at no charge. - Greg
Overall, I am very happy with the product and the service you have providedReaders: It's worth noting that the difference in diameter between David's tamper (above) and Steve's tamper (below) was less than a hair's thickness. Their differing results indicate the inconsistency in filter basket diameters, and that the only way to get a 'perfect fit' is to supply a filter basket with the order. - Greg
- Steve Gillingham - Tas - 58mm Deluxe
- I'm still very happy with the tamper and my friends have passed on very positive comments as
well.
The only negative point is that 58mm does not quite fit the Rancilio double basket perfectly. There is a thin layer of grounds left adhering to the outside of the basket after tamping. This could have been overcome by providing an exact measurement when ordering the tamper (I didn't have a micrometer handy). From memory you do suggest using a micrometer on your website. This would be worth emphasizing for any perfectionists out there!
Steve - over time, the Rancilio baskets actually get crushed by the portafilter gripping mechanism, thereby ever so slighly reducing its internal diameter. It's in the order of 0.1 - 0.2mm, but at these sorts of tolerances, if you start off with a tamper which is a 'perfect' fit, chances are it won't fit at all in a few years (which isn't long considering how long the tamper will last for). It's worth noting that the tamper does need a small amount of clearance to allow you to use it without it seizing on the sides of the filter basket. The other comments on this page indicate that another customer with exactly the same size tamper said it was too big for one of their baskets! - Greg

- Ordered my coffee tamper in time for Christmas, but I had a problem finding the correct size for the tamper. The coffee maker was in the London. Did not seem as if the tamper would make it in time for Christmas. The tamper was to be a present for my son-in-law, a avid coffee aficionado. End of story was good, measurement determined & Greg made a special effort to ensure I received it in time for Christmas.
Thanks Greg.

- Greg,
I have used the tamper for a few weeks and can say, without reservation, that it is fantastic. I have experienced a huge improvement in my espresso creation. The tamper looks precision engineered and yet touched by the hand of an artisan. The handle retains the natural beauty of the Jarrah. This tool is prominently displayed on the top of my Silvia and not hidden away in a drawer.
I congratulate you on the service I received - it was first class. The order was dispatched very promptly and I received it in a more-than-acceptable (read: earlier than expected) timeframe.
I would recommend this product without hesitation.
Thanks

Thanks again,

- Dear Greg
I apologise for not getting back to you earlier. I actually got the tamper a few weeks ago and am delighted with it - and so is my wife. The solid steel does make a huge difference to the extracted expresso than the plastic one that came with our Rancilio Sylvia coffee machine. We like the beautiful jarrah handle and the way its shaped provides an excellent grip. We might add that we are very satisfied with your personalised service.
Thanks a lot!
Kindest regards,

- Hi Greg
Couldn't be happier with the tamper - the workmanship is excellent and the choice of materials are top quality (I especially like the engraved web address on the handle). The fit in the filter basket is very good and it certainly makes it quicker and more consistent to get a good tamp than using the standard plastic tamper that came with my Silvia. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one of your tampers to anyone who loves a good coffee.
Regards,
Kevin - Mark Loveridge - NSW - 58mm Deluxe
- Hi Greg,
Just to let you know that I'm really happy with the tamper I purchased from you. I've given it a thorough work out in the last few weeks. I wanted to remove variations in my tamping and I got immediate results thanks. The Jarah handle contrasts really well with the stainless steel of the tamper base and my Silvia machine. A lot of people have said how good it looks.
I couldn't fault your service. I was impressed to get a realistic delivery date and have the tamper arrive ahead of schedule, rather than the other way. Thanks for keeping me posted on its progress too.
Keep up the great work and service.
Thanks,
Mark - Tony - Vic - 58mm Deluxe
- Hi Greg,
Tamper arrived yesterday. The workmanship is great, good weight, and filter basket fit is perfect. My Wife and friends are bemused about the trouble I've gone to to find a new tamper - I guess some folks just don't appreciate a good piece of engineering huh?!
Keep up the good work - I especially appreciate the service in terms of the feedback via email. It makes all the difference, especially for those people anxious about doing business over the internet.

Greg,
The tamper is a little ripper! It's superbly crafted, a delight to use and has significantly increased the quality and consistency of our shots. Your email updates throughout the purchasing and manufacturing process indicated a respect for the customer that many internet sales companies should strive for. I would certainly recommend both your product and sales service to any prospective buyer.

Dear Greg,
Thank you for the coffee tamper. I received it on Tuesday this week. It's very beautifully made. My coffee pucks are much firmer now and the coffee is tasting better.

Have a Happy New Year.
Angela - Roy Cutts - Vic - 57mm Deluxe
- Hi Greg,
Thanks for the tamper and your prompt attention. It arrived safely. How couldn't it - it's built like the proverbial stone toilet. I know it's a simple device, but it's beautiful and fits exactly. A perfect design example of Form and Function. I wouldn't have thought that correct tamping made a difference. It does, with knobs on!
It's false economy for any coffee connoisseur not to use a decent tamper. I wish that I'd stumbled over your web-site many bags of coffee earlier.
Regards,
Roy. - Lee Humphreys - NSW - 57mm Deluxe
- My apologies for not getting back to you sooner, I have been away for
the past week. I did receive the tamper a couple of days after you
posted it, so the delivery was excellent, particularly considering the
time of year.
The tamper is a work of art, it also does a pretty fine job of tamping too!! Initially it was a smidge tight to fit the double basket that I use, but now fits perfectly. I've found a little trick in that if you 'spin' the tamper after tamping, coffee doesn't stick to the tamper - I keep my coffee in the fridge so it's a bit moist when I use it. It has definately improved the consistency of my coffee making. I use Espresso Meridionale & Mocha Java from Alan @ Coffee for Connoisseurs.
So thank you Greg for a wonderful product. Have a great Christmas and all the best for the New Year.
Kind Regards,

Sorry it took a while for me to write this...
Just letting you know the tamper works very well and looks great - much better than the plastic rubbish that came with the machine. It's much easier to be consistent with your model. Thanks very much for having it ready so quickly (you must have known I was going to order one!)
Cheers - best of luck with any future creations

- I'm extremely satisfied with my the tamper. Superb craftsmanship.
The service was as good as I expected - that is, to the level that
things went effortlessly. As for the tamper, it was adequatly packed and arrived in mint condition, which is great.
It's been sitting on top of my Silvia since the day it came and has been put to the test several times a day, never faltering. It's rock solid. My friends comment on its looks as well, which is a plus - for you and me both.

Yes the tamper arrived on the day of my husband's birthday - brilliant.
It is a beautifully finished piece of equipment and a pleasure to use.
Goodness knows what the science of coffee making is all about, but this tamper makes a beaitiful coffee!

- Alex - VIC - Custom tamper for San Marina Lisa Junior
- I am very happy with the tamper. It was custom made to fit my San Marino Lisa Junior machine. It was of great quality, and feels nice and heavy. The argument of 'flat or convex shape' is not a problem; it is flat, and it works well; it even 'spins' when polishing the shot!

- I couldn't be happier with the Coffee Tamper I received from Greg
Pullman. There's a certain satisfaction I take from knowing that it was made
by hand and you can tell the time that's gone in to making it. The
finish is fantastic and it fits the basket for my Rancilio Silvia
perfectly.
Although I didn't really expect it, since receiving my tamper, I've actually noticed a massive increase in the quality of shots the I can pull. I would be happy to recommend Greg Pullman's Coffee Tampers to anyone
- Name withheld - WA - 58mm Deluxe
- Greg,
I have used it with mixed success. Success for me is getting a flat even tamp with no crumbly edges every time after a single press. I find I get quite a slant on the top of the coffee, but that may say more about my co-ordination that anything else. It is consistently sloping one way so over time I'll just figure out how to "adapt" my own technique. Also I find the edges can be a bit variable. With the incorrectly sized plastic tamper I can sort of go around the edges and tamp into the corners. When you have a perfectly sized tamper that flexibility sort of goes away. I think the real difficulty here is getting my doserless Rocky to distribute the coffee evenly in the basket. I have tried tapping and shaking, as it's grinding and then after, but nothing is fool proof. Generally everything works OK.
(If you're working around shoulder height or have your wrist straight when tamping, the force required for a good tamp can skew your wrist slightly and result in a sloped tamp as you described. Tamping at about waist height with your wrist angled upwards will minimise the sideways movement of your wrist, thereby centralising the tamping pressure, and aiding in achieving a flat tamp. - Greg)
I like the weight, it feels good, it's certainly got a great finish and the overall aesthetics are very good. I was very happy with your service and response, although we didn't receive them until Tuesday this week, which says something about satisfaction with Australia Post rather than your efforts. Quite amazing how quickly/slowly things take. I get things days before I expect sometimes, and then other times it's ..... well ..... pretty poor.
Thanks again!
- Paul Shearman - NSW - Custom tampers for La Pavoni, La Cimbali
- I recently had Greg make me a tamper for my La Pavone. It was an
unusual size and to make matters worse the two filter baskets had slightly
different diameters due to the process where they were punched out.
However I can't speak highly enough of the after sales service to correct
this problem which was no fault of Coffee Tampers. The tamper had the
most minute adjustments made and now fits both baskets very well. As well
I had a tamper made for my La Cimbali which was a different size again.
It was also a perfect fit and the one Jarrah handle can be used for
both tampers saving me money. I would recommend Coffee Tampers to anyone
who wants a finely engineered tamper, an attractive accessory and a
quality product.

Well this reply has been a long time intended but a long time coming. Searching for a perfect coffee is, I have found, one of the original mystic arts. All manner of equipment is necessary - all requiring eye appeal as well as functionality. Your tamper satisfies both criteria. When using it I feel that I get "positive feedback" from the compression process - something that didn't happen before. The result is consistent and predictable and I like that.
From the aesthetic standpoint I like the look of the stainless steel which has the appearance and weight of an quality engineered object. The handle is attractive and is a comfortable grip. I like the fact that it has a history. As it is removable to clean the steel section it will remain attractive. All in all I prize my tamper as a worthy accessory for my Rancillio machine - as I follow the quest for that perfect espresso.
Greg, you can use my email if you wish - I really am as happy with my tamper as I state above.
Regards,
Paul
P.S. Something to rest the tamper on which is compatible and attractive would be great as an improvement. I don't like to put it on the bench as I do prize its appearance. I use a small plastic lid which is convenient but not much to look at.
Paul - Good idea, I'll see if I can do something about that. Thanks for the suggestion. - Greg

Received the tamper yesterday (actually it arrived monday but I missed the post). Wow, it looks incredible. The effort put into beats anything that could have been mass produced. My only concern now is that my machine isn't good enough for it :)
Thanks again
Thanks for all your hard work, I'll be recommending you to anyone who needs a top of the line tamper.

- Dear Greg,
The tamper arrived this morning. I was very excited. The item is simply beautiful. The size is absolutely perfect for both baskets. The handle is extra special- beautiful wood with a mysterious smell. The wine barrel heritage is a great special touch.
As expected, the primary function of the tamper - making coffee, is 100% fulfilled. The evenness and the consistency of the tamping are second to none.
Thank you again for the prompt service and the personal touches. I appreciate your business and I am looking forward to the opportunity when I can recommend you to another pedantic freak like myself.
All the best,
Once again, it has been great fun dealing with you on the "tamper issue". Thanks again for your prompt and dedicated assistance.

Hello Greg,
The new tamper arrived yesterday, and it fits perfectly. Even 0.1mm larger would not have been a problem. It is a beautiful piece, and it makes tamping a lot easier, faster and consistent compared to my old plastic tamper. Since I save so much time, I could have an extra coffee this morning before rushing off to work.
Thank you very much for excellent service and a super tamper!

- I recently bought a gaggia factory lever machine. It came with the
standard useless palstic tamper which doesn't fit the basket. Given the smaller than usual 52 mm basket I decided that I needed a custom made tamper. I found Greg Pullman's site through coffeegeek and contacted him. I was lucky in that we live in the same city. i gave him the basket to measure and the tamper was produced quickly and I put it to immediately use.
Now I have a perfectly fitting tamper with a wooden handle and stainless steel body. It looks very nice and does the job beautifully.

Writing to let you know how delighted I am with the tamper purchased approx 4 weeks ago. The service provided was second to none with rapid response times to enquiries and a well packaged prompt delivery. The tamper is flawless, looks great has a nice weight/feel and fits my portafilters perfectly. With a little practice I am consistently producing correcty pressured even tamps resulting in a noticeable improvement in the overall quality of my espresso shots.

- Hi Greg,
Have no complaints about the tamper or the service. Order was received and dispatched very promptly.Web site contained enough information / detail to be comfortable with placing an order for the product. Weight and feel is perfect, handle shape is comfortable, looks like a precision piece of steel, fit for the portafilter is perfect. Only recommendation I would have, would be to include some sort of embossing or badge on the handle to finish it off?

I am delighted with the purchase of my tamper. The unit is exactly as
described, and pictured on the website. The quality of the workmanship
is self evident in the unit. Packaging was more than adequate for the
trip through the post, and the unit arrived unblemished. Greg was an
absolute pleasure to do business with, and I would not hesitate to
recommend him to anyone else.
The other day I bought a new coffee machine and the guy was so impressed with your tamper and my recommendation, he wanted your website details.

Adam - Peter Prassinos - VIC - Custom tamper for Solis SL-90
- Yes it is exactly as I expected it to be and I like the weight and feel
of it.
The finish has a couple of imperfections that are minor - a very small indentation on the bottom edge of the disk (can hardly see it) and a blemish in the wooden handle that gives it character I suppose, but may start to break up in the future.(Peter - the handles are pre-treated with three coats of Danish oil which penetrates the wood and will prevent any drying and cracking of the handle. Like leather, Jarrah is a natural product, and therefore every handle will have variations in grain density and consistency. Regarding the dent, as of October 2003 I'm sending tampers bubble-wrapped, foam-packed, inside cardboard boxes, to prevent any possible damage!)
The diameter of the tamper fits the double basket perfectly, however it is slightly tighter for the single basket - who would have thought that they are slightly different? It takes a bit of twisting to get it out of the basket after tamping, but I think it is loosening up - not really sure btw, maybe I am just being firmer with it.I am pleased with the consistency of the tamps and actually look forward to use it every time I make a coffee.

- Imagine a man in the throes of his wedding arrangements still taking
time to promptly answer my tamper inquiry. Such is the dedication and
excellent service I recieved. My tamper arrived ahead of schedule and was so
simple to install I didn't need the colour instructions to fit it (these
instructions were more complete than the owners 'manual' that came with the
machine!).
Not only does the high-grade tamper look a natural fit to the machine, it does a far superior job of evenly packing the shot. Both outlets get an even stream of coffee making the fights over the bigger cup a thing of the past.

The tamper looks extremely attractive paired with the napoletana 2. Excellent build, very nice and solid too. The stainless steel is really good and looks as new as it was before first use.
The tamper was also delivered promptly and the whole process was well-communicated.much thanks!

Just a short note of thanks for the tamper. It's perfect. You machined it to exactly fit the basket and the difference the tamper has made is astounding. I don't know how I managed before with the plastic tamper. Besides the functionality, it looks great!

- I was very happy with the ordering process as you regularly kept me
informed of how the order was coming along, when you received my cheque,
when the order was sent out, etc. This is a big plus when you're
ordering stuff from people you don't know. I would happily recommend your
service to other people.
One negative was that the tamper had a damaged bottom edge (presumably this happened in transit, even though it was packaged very well). Looked like something rough had hit it edge on, which created a small burred area on the side and tamping face. A few minutes with some 1200 SiC paper fixed this, so it's barely noticeable now. I can't really criticise the packaging though, as it was packed as well as I would expect. I guess you can't control what happens once it's in the postal system.
(Chris - Sorry to hear that. You're correct, it is difficult to control what happens in transit, but as of October 2003 I've been sending the tampers in boxes instead of padded bags. It's a shame to make a perfect tamper, and then have it damaged in transit, and the boxes should prevent a reoccurrence of this. Glad you got it fixed! - Greg)
The tamper itself is excellent. Apart from the previously mentioned dent, the quality is perfect. The jarrah handle is a real feature. It's comfortable to use, has a nice finish on it, and it looks great. It's very well attached to the stainless base and I can't see it ever coming loose. The stainless tamper is a perfect fit for my 58mm Rancilio portafilter basket. It's nice and heavy, and the finish and machining quality is excellent. In short, the tamper is as good as anything I would expect from a commercial outfit (probably better - I wouldn't get a vintage jarrah handle from the USA!).
I guess the main issue is the coffee though. Going from the plastic toy tamper from my Silvia to the stainless tamper has definitely improved the consistency of my espresso shots. With the plastic tamper I would usually get good shots, but it would take a bit of effort, and even then too often I would still end up with bad shot times and the coffee puck falling to bits when I would knock it out of the portafilter (not a good sign). With the stainless tamper I get great shots every time, and it is easy. The shot time is always just right, the coffee always comes out with that nice consistency, I always get good crema, and the used coffee puck always drops out of the basket in one piece with barely a tap. I was honestly surprised at the level of improvement in quality and consistency it offered, and I definitely consider it a worthwhile purchase.
I use the tamper often, and I can't think of anything that needs improving. It performs its function well, it's comfortable to use, and it looks good sitting on top of my machine. Can't ask for much more than that.
Cheers,

- Thank you very much for the tamper. It arrived a few days ago. It's
an excellent tamper, and using it is an absolute pleasure!
Once again, thank you for making quality tampers available to the local market. - Chris Stapleton - VIC - 58mm Deluxe
- Hi Greg,
Not only does your tamper help make great coffee! It is the perfect mate for my Silvia and Rocky. With it's beautiful timber handle and solid stainless steel it is a real talking point. If only the great uneducated understood what makes a great coffee!
Thanks & Kind Regards

- Hi Greg,
My tamper has just arrived - thanks for the prompt service. I just made a great coffee with it and it's heaps better than the silly piece of plastic I've being using! I got so much more crema with the new tamper, I mustn't have been doing the tamp as even as I thought I was.
Warm regards,
What a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, thank you. It looks great next to Miss. Silvia and the Lux grinder. If only my friends could understand this obsession with coffee! Thanks so much for doing this. Much appreciated.

- I have a Krups machine rather than a Silvia and as such was unsure of the basket size. Greg said it would be no problem to send the basket to him to ensure precise fitting of the tamper, which I did. I sent the basket to him on a monday and recieved the tamper and basket back the following Friday (less than 2 weeks). I was very impressed with the standard of craftmanship, it was obviously made by someone who cares about quality. The weight of it in your hand suggests quality and sturdiness, and the style would be at home in the most sophisticated of coffee shops. A job well done!

Hi Greg,
Just writing...better late than never to thank you and compliment you on the 58mm tamper. It works perfectly with my Silvia, and most importantly, really looks the part. A very classy job indeed.
Many thanks,

- The tamper was waiting for me when I got back to the office. Very nice workmanship and fits very well in the Rancilio Silvia portafilter. Made a good cup of coffee with it this morning.
Many thanks,

- Just letting you know that I received the tamper on Friday. I've used it over the weekend and it works wonderfully and looks great. I'm very happy with it!
- Justin Bedo - ACT - 58mm Deluxe tamper
- Hi Greg,
The tamper functions well and is aesthetically pleasing. The construction quality is of a high standard and the tamper has a nice weight and feel. It works considerably better then the plastic tamper provided with my machine (Rancilio Silvia).
Cheers,
I am very happy with my purchase and I recommend it to anyone looking for a quality tamper that will fit larger diameter baskets.

- Greg,
Firstly, the Stainless steel tamper that you make is an absolute gem! the Quaha Napoletanas 2 that I bought is a great unit, but the only short coming was that the tamper is a bit small and now with the Tamper modification it's a now fantastic unit.
The Tamper sits perfectly in the original spot and the group/basket fits perfectly over the tamper, Now when I push the basket onto the tamper its just one operation and not moving it around and around to get all of the coffee flat!I have no hesitation in recommending to anyone this tamper in place of the original equipment.
kind regards,
Kelly AinsliePS. the post was fast, the tamper was in perfect order and the instructions were easy to follow. But I would say you don't have to take the water tank out and in fact, I didn't even pull the filter off the hose, there is enough slack to slide the cover to the end and hang it to one side then change the tamper over. I suppose someone less mechanical should go step by step.
Kelly - that's true. The instructions are such because I can't guarantee that every Napoletana is built to exactly the same mechanical tolerances, so what may work on one machine may not work on another. Therefore the instructions have been written to cover the worst case scenario of both machine build and installer aptitude, and provide guidance for removing all parts which may be necessary to perform the installation. The swap is a bit easier to perform if parts are out of the way, however several steps can be easily left out if the installer is comfortable doing so. - Greg

- Greg,
Thanks so much for your stainless steel tamper for a replacement tamper for my new Napoletana. From use I agreed with previous comments made on the original Tamper being on the small side.
Your package arrived promptly and many thanks for keeping me informed on the status of my order. Being busy during Christmas I really didn't have a chance to install it straightaway but even just using the tamper by itself made a big difference - nice and even. Before installing it I read the your detailed instructions carefully. I had a hassle free installation, and replacement of the original tamper was done in around 5 minutes from start to finish. The Napoletana now looks even better with this stainless steel tamper.
Tamping the coffee now is so much easier, effective and consistent that it is now reflected in a better espresso.
Thanks.

- Thank you for the coffee tamper, I have received it and fitted to my machine. The fitting part, as you eluded to was certainly a nightmare. How could they build a machine so un-user friendly?
My only comment is that whilst I was fitting the tamper, I had wished that I got the handle separate tamper instead, too save all the heart ache of fitting and dismantling the case etc etc...
So my suggestion would be to maybe further warn or assist purchasers by providing the fitting instructions upfront, so that they can even take the cover off and look for themselves as to the task, and whether they are mechanically minded enough to bother fitting.
Anyway, I am happy with it now, but still not sure how hard I am tamping when going in the upward direction.Hope this helps you and other coffee lovers out there. Happy New Year!
Barry - I've added the installation instructions to the webpage as you suggested. Good idea! - Greg
