The Barista tamper base consists of the following:
- a precision-machined stainless steel tamper base with TrueTamp rings for a consistent and level tamp
- an ergonomic synthetic rubber compression zone for maximum comfort and to minimise high-volume fatigue
- a set of contoured stainless steel spacers providing four different handle heights. No two hands are the same and research has shown a wide variety of optimum handle heights depending on the operator's hand size, so these spacers allow you to adjust the handle from 2, 5 and 8mm above the minimum height. The contour ensures the ergonomic curve of the tamper continues throughout the whole unit
About 316 Grade Steel
By popular demand, we have added 316 grade Barista bases to our range meaning we now offer tampers in this premium grade steel in both the Deluxe and Barista range. Our regular tamper bases are made from top-quality 304 grade Australian stainless steel and already provide a higher quality finish than that typically provided by other tamper manufacturers, particularly those whose parts are made in developing countries. This is because the steel used in developing countries is typically lower grade than that available in Australia which can lead to poorer surface finish and ultimately corrosion. Furthermore, cheaper manufacturing processes often run the cutting tools at faster travel rates than used on Pullman tamper bases which allow them to cut more steel in a given amount of time. This results in a rough ridged finish on the steel rather than a smooth finish as on Pullman units. See the photographs below for a comparison between Pullman units and some popular alternatives.
Australian 316 grade stainless steel contains molybdenum and a higher nickel content which make it a tougher material with greater corrosion resistance and thus is often used in marine applications or similarly harsh environments. It lends itself to a slightly better surface finish than 304 grade steel, however a number of factors influence the final appearance so this may not always be obvious. Note that while Pullman units are always high quality smooth surfaced units made from Australian steel, the hand-made element of every tamper base means surface finish may vary slightly from unit to unit.
Because of its more precious ingredients, 316 grade steel is a more expensive product than 304, takes longer to machine on account of its harder composition and wears the cutting tools faster. Since our 304 grade product is already a premium quality unit appreciated by many, 316 grade bases are normally only chosen by those who demand the absolute best of the best.
What Size?
Unlike products from many tamper suppliers, your Pullman tamper base is a precision-machined instrument made to 50 micron (0.05mm) tolerances to ensure you get exactly the right size tamper base required for your machine. There are many different sizes of filter baskets available, so the options below will help us provide the right size tamper for your machine:
- If your machine uses 58mm filter baskets and you are purchasing a filter basket from us with your order, we will take care of the sizing, you don't need to worry about anything else. However you may like to email us to confirm our filter baskets will fit your machine.
- If you're not buying replacement filter baskets, we recommend sending your filter basket in for sizing to make sure you get exactly the right size tamper. Why should I send my basket?

Important Notes
- Tamper handles and tamper bases are sold separately. While they can be purchased separately if necessary, you require both a base and a handle for a complete tamper.
- Bases and handles from the Deluxe and Barista range are not interchangeable. If you are purchasing a Barista handle you must also purchase a Barista base for a complete Barista tamper. See the range of Barista handles available for purchase.
- The Barista tamper is ONLY AVAILABLE IN SIZES BETWEEN 57mm and 58.8mm. If your filter basket is smaller than this you will need to purchase a Deluxe tamper
